Hi, I'm Gary — the owner, designer and maker behind The Good Grain.
Based in Mount Eliza on the Mornington Peninsula, I design and build custom timber furniture from my own workshop, creating pieces made specifically for the homes and spaces they’re going into.
I'm a family man, a hands-on maker and someone who genuinely enjoys working with timber. What started as a passion for woodworking has grown into a business that allows me to do what I love every day — taking a customer's idea, working through the details with them and turning it into something they can enjoy for years.
I work directly with every customer, from the first conversation through to the finished piece. That means no mass production, no off-the-shelf furniture and no passing your project from one person to another. Just me, my workshop and a shared idea of what we can create together.

A passion for woodworking, turned into a business.
How it started
The Good Grain started in 2020, when I began making small pieces of furniture from my home workshop.
What started as a creative outlet quickly grew. Friends, family and word of mouth brought more enquiries, and before long I was being asked to build custom pieces for people's homes.
I realised there was something pretty special about being able to take a piece of timber and turn it into something completely unique — something designed around a particular home, a particular space and the people who would use it.
What began as a passion eventually became a full-time business. Today, I work from my workshop in Mount Eliza, designing and building custom furniture for customers across the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne.
I'm still hands-on with every project, from selecting the timber and working through the design to building and finishing the final piece. That's the part I love most.

For me, the best part of The Good Grain is knowing that something I've made will become part of someone's home.
I'm a family man, and home has always been important to me. I understand that the furniture we live with isn't just about how it looks — it's where people gather, where everyday life happens and where memories are made.
That's one of the reasons I love custom furniture. I get to make something that is genuinely yours. Something that fits your space, suits the way you live and has a story behind it.
Most days you'll find me in my workshop in Mount Eliza, surrounded by timber, tools and more sawdust than I'd probably like to admit. It's a hands-on job, and that's exactly how I like it. I enjoy taking a rough piece of timber and gradually turning it into something functional, beautiful and built to last.
Every piece I make leaves the workshop with a little bit of me in it — and hopefully becomes a piece that you'll enjoy for many years to come.
